COLLOQUIUM PROJECT
ABSTRACT

With the problematic relations of race in America, children are being exposed to more representations of violence and bigotry. These instances are doing harm to the self image of children of color. Discussing the popularity of classical children's books that present race and identity very negatively, I argue that the industry of children's literature has been very stratified. By examining a shift in children's literature over time, I track the change in the inclusiveness of children's books as a positive tool that provides the access to better representation and race relations for kid's today.
